Firm Topology

A large technology company building out high-density data center capacity, with hundreds of MW in the development pipeline.

The Team

Twenty-two electrical engineers distributed across four regions. Reports to the VP of Data Center Engineering.

The challenge

Lead the electrical architecture for a major data center capacity expansion, focusing on 48V DC distribution and high-density power topology.

Role overview

Architectural direction for power systems across the capacity build-out. Decisions here cascade to every new facility design and every retrofit program. Evaluating emerging technologies (solid-state transformers, battery-backed bus architectures, fuel cell integration) and deciding what gets adopted and what stays on the watch list.

Specializations

2N topologygenerator parallelingUPS systems

Technical requirements

  • BSEE. MSEE preferred.
  • 15+ years in power systems engineering, with 8+ years in data center or mission-critical environments
  • Demonstrated experience defining power architecture specifications adopted across multiple facilities
  • Deep understanding of reliability engineering (Markov models, fault tree analysis) applied to power systems
  • Experience with both 2N and Catcher/Isolated Redundant topologies
  • Track record of evaluating and piloting emerging power technologies

Key responsibilities

  • Define the power architecture specification for the capacity build-out (400+ MW planned capacity)
  • Evaluate and pilot emerging power technologies including solid-state circuit breakers and battery bus architectures
  • Commission reliability analyses (Markov models, fault tree analysis) to quantify impact of topology changes on facility availability, and incorporate results into architecture recommendations
  • Set generator and UPS specifications that procurement uses for vendor negotiations across all campuses
  • Mentor and technically guide 20+ electrical engineers across regional design teams
  • Present architecture recommendations to executive leadership with quantified cost and reliability trade-offs

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $270,000 - $315,000
  • RSU grant refreshed annually
  • Annual cash bonus 15-20% of base
  • Extended paid leave program (4 weeks every 5 years)
  • On-site gym, meals, and commuter benefits
