Principal Mechanical Engineer, Liquid Cooling Systems

Base Salary

$190K - $225K

Firm Topology

Global colocation provider operating data centers across major markets worldwide, supporting enterprise and hyperscale customers through the transition to high-density GPU workloads.

The Team

Reports to VP of Engineering. Six mechanical engineers and two thermal analysts make up the core group, with additional consultants pulled in for site-specific deployments.

The challenge

GPU clusters are driving rack densities past what air cooling can handle. You will define the facility-level liquid cooling infrastructure -- CDU strategy, row manifold topology, piping specifications -- that lets existing facilities support 60 kW+ racks without full mechanical plant replacement.

Role overview

The facility-level liquid cooling infrastructure strategy across the entire portfolio runs through this role. CDU sizing and vendor qualification, piping specifications for row manifolds and facility distribution loops, and the kW-to-MW density management targets that operations teams maintain post-handover. You specify the requirements that OEM cooling solutions must meet and evaluate their compatibility with facility infrastructure.

Specializations

Technical requirements

  • BSME or equivalent.
  • 12+ years in mechanical/thermal engineering, with 5+ years in data center or mission-critical cooling
  • Direct experience specifying or deploying facility-level liquid cooling systems (CDUs, row manifolds, facility piping)
  • Ability to interpret computational fluid dynamics results (6SigmaDCX, FloTHERM, or equivalent) and translate findings into infrastructure decisions
  • Experience evaluating OEM liquid cooling solutions for facility integration compatibility
  • Experience managing relationships with mechanical OEM vendors

Key responsibilities

  • Define the facility-level liquid cooling infrastructure specification for retrofit and greenfield facilities supporting 40-80 kW per rack
  • Develop CDU sizing methodology and qualify coolant distribution unit vendors against facility integration requirements
  • Develop piping design specifications including material selection, leak detection integration, and redundancy topology for row manifolds and facility distribution loops
  • Review thermal analysis results from the thermal engineering team and translate findings into CDU capacity decisions and facility infrastructure adjustments
  • Coordinate with electrical engineering on power and cooling load synchronization across high-density zones
  • Author and maintain the firm's mechanical design specifications for AI-ready facility liquid cooling infrastructure

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $190,000 - $225,000
  • Equity participation in the parent company
  • Annual technology conference stipend ($5,000)
  • Flexible hybrid schedule (3 days on-site, 2 remote)
  • 401(k) match to 6%
