Contract Power Systems Studies Engineer, Mission-Critical

Base Salary

$229K - $270K

Apply to this role

Firm Topology

An owner's-engineering and power-systems consultancy that produces the electrical studies behind mission-critical and data-center facility designs across the Southeast.

The Team

A small studies group of power-systems engineers. You report to the Principal Engineer on study assignments.

The challenge

Several mission-critical projects are in design at once, each needing a study package the owner and the AHJ can stamp against. The one-lines keep changing as the electrical design firms up, and the short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash results have to keep pace without falling out of agreement with each other.

Role overview

This is a studies role, not a field role. You model the system in SKM PowerTools or ETAP and produce the short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash study packages that back a mission-critical facility design. Incident-energy calculations to IEEE 1584, coordination across the protective device layers, and a study report the owner's engineering team and the AHJ rely on. You hand off the study report. You don't turn a wrench.

Specializations

Technical requirements

  • BSEE or equivalent
  • 8+ years in power systems studies, with mission-critical or data-center experience
  • Expert with SKM PowerTools or ETAP for short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash analysis
  • Working knowledge of IEEE 1584, NFPA 70E, and NFPA 70 (NEC)
  • Familiarity with IEEE 141 and IEEE 242 (Buff and Red books)
  • Ability to produce stampable study reports for owner and AHJ review

Key responsibilities

  • Perform short-circuit and protective device coordination studies in SKM PowerTools or ETAP
  • Calculate arc-flash incident energy and produce arc-flash study packages to IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E
  • Build and maintain the one-line model as the electrical design develops
  • Run load flow analysis to support facility electrical basis of design
  • Produce study reports for owner and AHJ review
  • Review electrical contractor submittals against the study assumptions and flag discrepancies

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly rate: $110-130/hour ($228,800 - $270,400 annualized)
  • Fully remote study work
  • Per-project engagement with renewal based on pipeline
  • Flexible schedule between study packages
