Firm Topology

Power electronics company designing next-generation grid-tied inverters for utility-scale solar and battery storage. The firm's inverters are deployed on multiple GW of operating projects.

The Team

Under the VP of Engineering, six power electronics engineers and four firmware engineers collaborate on hardware and control co-design.

The challenge

The next inverter platform needs to increase power density by 40% using silicon carbide switches while meeting UL 1741 SA and IEEE 1547-2018 grid support requirements.

Role overview

You design the power stage and control algorithms for grid-tied inverters. Switching device selection, gate driver design, modulation strategy development, and thermal packaging -- all the way through to a form factor that can be manufactured and field-serviced.

Specializations

SiC MOSFETsinverter topologyEMI compliance

Technical requirements

  • MSEE with focus on power electronics
  • 7+ years designing power converters, with 3+ years on grid-tied inverter products
  • Hands-on experience with SiC MOSFET-based converter design and characterization
  • Proficiency in PLECS, PSIM, or LTspice for converter simulation
  • Experience with PCB layout for high-frequency power circuits (4+ layer power stage boards)
  • Understanding of UL 1741, IEEE 1547-2018, and grid interconnection requirements

Key responsibilities

  • Design power converter topologies for utility-scale inverters in the 250 kW to 4 MW range
  • Select and characterize SiC MOSFET and IGBT switching devices for new inverter platforms
  • Develop gate driver circuits and dead-time optimization strategies for efficiency and EMI performance
  • Design output filter stages (LCL, LLCL) for grid current THD compliance
  • Quantify loss distribution across operating conditions to support thermal management design
  • Lead EMC pre-compliance testing and design iterations to meet FCC Part 15 and CISPR 11

Compensation & Benefits

  • Stock options in a growth-stage company
  • Base salary: $150,000 - $180,000
  • Patent bonus ($3,000 per filing)
  • Conference travel budget
  • Hybrid schedule (4 days on-site, 1 remote)
