Firm Topology

EV manufacturer producing commercial electric trucks. The company has delivered hundreds of Class 6-8 electric trucks and is launching a next-generation battery platform with a new cell chemistry.

The Team

Four validation engineers and three test technicians. Battery Engineering Manager is the direct report.

The challenge

Lead the validation and abuse testing program for high-voltage battery packs used in a growing fleet of commercial electric trucks. Define the protocols that ensure safety and reliability for Class 6-8 heavy-duty vehicles.

Role overview

Validation testing that proves battery packs are safe and durable for commercial truck applications. Test protocol design, data analysis, and the reports that support regulatory certification and customer acceptance. When a cell vents in a thermal runaway propagation test, your analysis determines whether the pack design passes or goes back to the drawing board.

  • 6+ years in battery testing and validation, with experience on automotive or commercial vehicle programs
  • Direct experience with abuse testing (thermal runaway, external short circuit, nail penetration)
  • Proficiency in battery test data analysis including capacity fade, impedance growth, and thermal characterization
  • Understanding of functional safety requirements for battery systems (ISO 26262, IEC 62619)
  • Experience with high-voltage safety practices for battery handling and testing

Key responsibilities

  • Design and execute validation test plans for high-voltage battery packs (400V+, 200+ kWh)
  • Develop abuse testing protocols for thermal runaway propagation, crush, overcharge, and external short circuit
  • Analyze test data to characterize cell and pack behavior under normal and abusive conditions
  • Support UN 38.3, UL 2580, and SAE J2464 certification testing with external labs
