Contract Grid-Scale Energy Storage Engineer

The challenge

A 400 MWh project in ERCOT needs to dispatch across four revenue streams simultaneously. The control strategy needs to maximize revenue while managing battery degradation to hit a 20-year project life.

Role overview

Technical engineering support for grid-scale battery storage projects from design through commissioning. System sizing, equipment specification, vendor proposal review, and dispatch optimization support for operations teams.

Specializations

Technical requirements

• BSEE or BSME with 6+ years in energy storage or power systems engineering
• Direct experience on grid-scale BESS projects (50 MWh+) from design through operations
• Understanding of wholesale electricity market structures (ERCOT, PJM, CAISO)
• Familiarity with battery degradation modeling and state of health estimation techniques
• Experience with SCADA systems and energy management platforms
• Working knowledge of IEEE 2800, UL 9540, and NFPA 855

Key responsibilities

• Size and specify battery energy storage systems for grid-scale applications (100 MWh to 1 GWh)
• Evaluate battery cell and module vendors based on cycle life, thermal performance, and warranty terms
• Develop dispatch strategies that optimize across multiple revenue streams while managing degradation
• Review electrical design packages for BESS projects including inverters, transformers, and SCADA integration
• Support commissioning and performance testing per IEC 62933 and IEEE 2800
• Analyze operational data to track state of health and predict capacity warranty compliance

Compensation & Benefits

• Hourly rate: $80-95/hour ($166,400 - $197,600 annualized)
• 12-month contract with extension option
