The challenge

The next-gen encryption device needs to handle 100 Gbps data rates while maintaining FIPS 140-3 Level 4 physical security requirements. Current devices max out at 40 Gbps.

Role overview

Embedded hardware and firmware for NSA-certified cryptographic devices. High-speed digital design, FPGA implementation, and information security converge in this role -- where a single side-channel vulnerability can compromise an entire classification system.

Specializations

Technical requirements

• BSEE or BS Computer Engineering with focus on embedded systems or hardware security
• 8+ years in secure embedded systems design, with 5+ years on NSA-certified or FIPS-validated products
• Experience with FPGA-based cryptographic implementations
• Understanding of side-channel attack resistance techniques and physical security mechanisms
• Proficiency in VHDL/Verilog for FPGA design and C/C++ for firmware development
• Active TS/SCI clearance required

Key responsibilities

• Design embedded hardware for Type 1 cryptographic devices supporting 100 Gbps data rates
• Implement cryptographic algorithms on FPGAs with side-channel attack resistance
• Design tamper-resistant enclosures and anti-tamper mechanisms per NSA TEMPEST and FIPS 140-3 requirements
• Develop firmware for secure boot, key management, and device lifecycle management
• Support NSA certification testing and evaluations for Type 1 product approval
• Perform security analysis to identify and mitigate potential attack vectors

Compensation & Benefits

• Clearance and crypto program premium included in base
• Base salary: $205,000 - $240,000
• Annual bonus 10-15%
