Senior Launch Vehicle Structures Engineer

Base Salary

$145K - $175K

Apply to this role

Firm Topology

A commercial launch vehicle company with an established flight record. The company is developing a next-generation reusable vehicle.

The Team

Ten structures engineers and two test engineers. Chief Structures Engineer is the direct report.

The challenge

A reusable first stage means the structures team is designing for a fatigue life that expendable vehicles never had to worry about. The cryogenic tank structure sees thermal cycling from -253C to ambient on every flight, and the vehicle has to fly again in weeks, not months. The analysis methods for this regime are not in any textbook.

Role overview

Structural design and analysis for launch vehicle hardware -- composites and metallics, FEA for flight-critical structures, and the test program that qualifies hardware for flight. This is not a paper-study role. The structures you analyze get built, tested, flown, recovered, inspected, and flown again. Analysis accuracy is verified by flight data, not peer review.

Specializations

composite structuresflight loads analysisFEA

Technical requirements

  • MS in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering
  • 7+ years in structural analysis and design, with 4+ years in launch vehicles or aerospace structures
  • Proficiency in FEA tools (NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or HyperMesh)
  • Experience with composite structural analysis (classical lamination theory, progressive failure)
  • Understanding of launch vehicle loads environments: acoustic, vibration, thermal, and aerodynamic
  • Experience with structural test correlation and model validation

Key responsibilities

  • Design and analyze composite and metallic structures for a reusable launch vehicle
  • Perform finite element analysis for flight loads, thermal, and vibration environments using NASTRAN or ABAQUS
  • Develop fatigue and damage tolerance analysis methods for reusable composite structures
  • Support structural test planning and correlation of test results with analytical predictions
  • Define material allowables and structural design criteria for reuse applications
  • Coordinate with manufacturing on producibility of structural designs (autoclave, filament winding, AFP)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $145,000 - $175,000
  • Stock options in a pre-IPO company
  • Launch bonus ($2,000 per successful mission)
  • Relocation support
  • 9/80 compressed schedule
