Contract Satellite RF Payload Engineer

The challenge

The SIGINT payload needs to achieve demanding sensitivity and instantaneous bandwidth targets in Ka-band while fitting within a tight mass allocation. The RF front-end design and integration is the critical path.

Role overview

RF payload subsystem design and integration for classified satellite programs. Phased array antennas, receivers, and signal processing chains operating in the space radiation and thermal environment -- where every dB of noise figure and every gram of mass matters.

Specializations

Technical requirements

• MSEE with RF/microwave focus
• 8+ years in RF systems engineering, with 4+ years on space or defense programs
• Experience with satellite payload RF design and integration
• Proficiency in RF simulation tools (Keysight ADS, AWR Microwave Office, or HFSS)
• Understanding of phased array antenna principles and calibration methods
• Active TS/SCI clearance required

Key responsibilities

• Design RF signal chains for satellite payload applications including LNAs, mixers, filters, and digitizers
• Perform link budget and sensitivity analysis for space-based receiver systems
• Support phased array antenna design and calibration for multi-beam satellite payloads
• Coordinate RF payload integration with spacecraft bus teams (power, thermal, EMC)
• Plan and execute RF payload testing in thermal-vacuum and EMC test environments
• Produce technical documentation for program reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR)

Compensation & Benefits

• Hourly rate: $100-115/hour ($208,000 - $239,200 annualized)
• 18-month contract aligned to program milestones
• Clearance premium included in rate
• On-site work required (SCIF environment)
• Per diem for non-local candidates
